Brian Mulligan returns to Oper Frankfurt for Tobias Kratzer’s new production of Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine as Nélusko. Having premiered in 1865, and originally set in the fifteenth century, Tobias Kratzer brings this production to the space age. Complete with astronauts and a spacewalk, this eccentric new production features Mulligan’s character Nélusko as a blue creature from another galaxy.

Performances of L’Africaine run from February 25 to April 2. Designer Rainer Sellmaier created the compelling costumes and set, with lighting by Jan Hartmann. Antonello Manacorda conducts an acclaimed roster of singers including Claudia Mahnke as Selika, Michael Spyres as Vasco de Gama, Kristen MacKinnon as Ines, Andreas Bauer as Don Pedro, Thomas Faulkner as Don Diego, Magnús Baldvinsson as the Inquisitor/Brahma Priest, Michael McCown as Don Alvar, and Bianca Andrea as Anna.
